Story from our Horton House Volunteer

Our Twilight Family is so fortunate to have wonderful volunteers in all our homes, who freely give of their skills, talents and abilities, their energy and their friendship to support others to live more fulfilled lives and they all have fascinating and unique stories of how and why they connected with volunteering.

This story is from our Horton House volunteer David, who is now also our Twilight Pastoral Carer. David (and occasionally his family!) is a talented musician, who shares his gifts with our residents on a regular basis.

How did you come to be a volunteer, David?

“Well, mum had been in aged care for over 6 years, she is non ambulatory and requires full care assistance.
During the many regular visits to mum at Horton House, I would often play piano for her since she loved music very much. What started out as 1:1 playing for mum quickly became mini gatherings with other residents joining in to listen.
Our Volunteer Coordinator Tweety saw how much the residents were enjoying the piano music, she then approached me to see if I would be willing to play on a regular basis. And this is how it all began with my volunteering at Twilight!”

What do you find the most rewarding part about volunteering at Twilight?

As to what I find most rewarding about volunteering at Twilight…
The most rewarding experience for me is seeing how much joy music brings to the residents! Seeing the residents smile and sing, tapping their feet/hands to the music really overwhelms my heart with joy. I receive as much as I give.
Thank you so much for sharing your story David. We really appreciate your contributions.
